Many people in the world today suffer from PTSD. What is PTSD?
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder triggered by highly stressful, frightening or distressing events.
People with PTSD often relive traumatic events in nightmares and flashbacks and may experience feelings of isolation, irritability and guilt;
They may also experience sleep disturbances such as insomnia and difficulty concentrating;
These symptoms are often severe and persistent enough to have a significant impact on a person's daily life.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be triggered by any situation that a person perceives as traumatic. These include:
Serious road traffic accidents;
Violent personal attacks such as sexual assault, robbery or mugging;
Involvement in military activities;
Serious health problems;
Childbirth experience;
PTSD can develop immediately after experiencing an unpleasant event, or weeks, months or even years later.
It is estimated that about one in three people who have experienced a traumatic event suffer from PTSD.
