PTSD

Many people in the world today suffer from PTSD. What is PTSD?

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder triggered by highly stressful, frightening or distressing events.

  • People with PTSD often relive traumatic events in nightmares and flashbacks and may experience feelings of isolation, irritability and guilt;

  • They may also experience sleep disturbances such as insomnia and difficulty concentrating;

These symptoms are often severe and persistent enough to have a significant impact on a person's daily life.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be triggered by any situation that a person perceives as traumatic. These include:

  • Serious road traffic accidents;

  • Violent personal attacks such as sexual assault, robbery or mugging;

  • Involvement in military activities;

  • Serious health problems;

  • Childbirth experience;

PTSD can develop immediately after experiencing an unpleasant event, or weeks, months or even years later.

It is estimated that about one in three people who have experienced a traumatic event suffer from PTSD.
